CRC392 Field Trip to Iceland

CRC 392 PhD students and PIs explore Iceland’s active volcanic and geothermal landscapes firsthand to investigate prebiotic environments and the geological processes linked to the origin of life.

06.07.2025 – 13.07.2025

In July 12 CRC 392 PhD students and 6 of our PIs took part in a field trip across Iceland to explore active volcanic and geothermal landscapes as natural laboratories for studying prebiotic environments and the origins of life. From rift zones and lava fields to geothermal systems and recent eruption sites, the trip combined hands-on geology with cross-disciplinary scientific exchange. The diverse locations allowed participants to directly connect theoretical concepts with real-world geological processes shaping early Earth analog environments. Beyond the science, the trip fostered intensive discussion, collaboration, and a shared experience that strengthened the CRC 392 community.
